Friends, "The One Where Underdog Gets Away": It's like a tradition

My review/recap of the November 17, 1994 episode after I pick paleontology as a major on a dare.

The first Thanksgiving episode for Friends is the first Thanksgiving that these six have together without their family. Perhaps they are becoming a new family?

Rachel wants to go to Vail to be with her parents on Thanksgiving, but she misses her plane when the group gets locked out of the apartment after being on the roof watching the Underdog balloon from the Macy's parade float away. Ross and Monica's parents go to Puerto Rico without them. Phoebe celebrates Thanksgiving with her grandmother in December because her grandmother's boyfriend is "lunar." Joey gets de-invited from his own family's dinner because he is the model on posters for STDS, and his family thinks he actually has one. Chandler boycotts Thanksgiving because when he was nine, his parents announced they were getting divorced at Thanksgiving dinner.

Monica decides to cook Thanksgiving dinner for all of them, even after each person has special requests so that it is like their own mothers' cooking (Ross wants lumps in the mashed potatoes, Phoebe wants peas and onions, and Joey wants tater-tots). The dinner is ruined though when they get locked out of the apartment while looking at Underdog float away. After a classic Monica freak-out, the group eats Chandler's Thanksgiving dinner of grilled cheese and Funyuns. They realize that in the end they are the one's that will always be there for each other.

The Ross sub-plot of wanting to talk to Carol's unborn baby felt a little strange and out of place. Perhaps the episode was short by 5 - 7 minutes and added that part. I guess it's important to keep Carol and Susan in the show, but they didn't really fit in this episode.

Other notes:
  • Ugly Naked Guy's fourth mention (this time with an Ugly Naked Gal)
  • Funniest parts of the episode: Monica and Rachel arguing over who should have grabbed the keys, and Joey finding the poster of him
Good episode and the beginning of the important Thanksgiving episodes for Friends.
