Trailer Reviews: A possible indie sleeper-hit and one sure fire bomb

A new feature of Watch with Spie will be reviews of movie trailers, usually the most important part in selling the idea of a movie to the general audience. Reviews of two very different trailers for two very different movies after I stand up in a convertible.

The first trailer is for Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star (Watch here), staring Nick Swardson (Grandma's Boy) as Bucky Larson, a nerdy guy from Iowa, who finds out that his parents were porn stars and decides to travel to Hollywood to follow in their footsteps.

I will tell you right now that this movie will be terrible. The trailer isn't very funny (maybe one or two good jokes), and the premise of the movie is just destined to fail. Nick Swardson is not leading-man material. He is great as a secondary character, but I don't think he can carry a movie. The Bucky Larson costume that Swardson wears (the awful wig and buck teeth) can only be used for cheap laughs, that just aren't even funny. The director of this movie is Tom Brady (not the football player), who's previously directed The Comebacks (2007) and The Hot Chick (2002), which were both terrible.

In my opinion, the people who made this movie continually pestered Adam Sandler (one of the founders of Happy Madison Productions, the company that produced this, as well as all of the other Adam Sandler and gang movies) until it was made. It was a way for Adam Sandler to let his friends make another movie.

Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star comes to theaters on September 9. Please make sure you have other plans.

The second trailer is for the movie The Myth of the American Sleepover (Watch here). The movie is about young teenagers living in the suburbs of Detroit on the last weekend of summer. Some are looking for love, while others are just looking for adventure.

The trailer doesn't really tell you what the movie is exactly about, but it just feels like this could be a little indie hit about young people growing up. It is the quintessential indie movie trailer, with the relatively quick cuts to characters faces, actors that are not famous, and the all important indie music.  There really is no stand out moment in the trailer because it all blends together to create an even trailer, instead of that one great moment in a weak trailer.

Will it be good? Who knows, but judging by the praise it got, which is featured in the trailer, it is a pretty solid movie. The Myth of the American Sleepover will be released in New York on July 22, Los Angeles on July 29, Detroit on August 5, and nationwide on video-on-demand on July 27.
