Friends, "The One with the Fake Monica": You know there's already a "Joseph Stalin"?

My review/recap of the April 27, 1995 episode after I take off my clothes and have a nightmare.

Compared to the past few episodes of Friends, this one was a great episode. However, it really isn't that good. It's certainly better than those last few but it's still no where near the best. It isn't a very funny episode, but it did have a couple good moments, with its two main plots and one sub-plot (which takes up about 5 minutes).

Monica's credit card is stolen, and she along with Phoebe and Rachel try and track down the thief. They find her at a dance studio, and Monica instantly befriends her because she is so charming and inspiring. They crash various parties, audition for Broadway shows, get drunk, and basically do things that Monica wouldn't normally do. Eventually the woman is arrested and Monica visits her in jail. Monica tells her everything and says that she doesn't want to go back to being who she was. The thief tells her that she can't change who she is.

Marcel begins to hump everything, and Ross finds out that it is because he has reached sexual maturity. If he is not handled properly he will become aggressive so Ross must apply to send Marcel to a zoo. He is eventually accepted to the San Diego Zoo. The group brings Marcel to the airport and they all say their touching goodbyes. As Ross is saying goodbye, Marcel starts humping his leg.

The short subplot involves Joey trying to come up with a stage name because his agent told him his name was too "ethnic" sounding. Chandler gives him some joke names, including "Joe Stalin," which Joey thinks is a good name. He comes back to the apartment and tells the group that he didn't get the part and that there already is a Joseph Stalin.

Sign of the Times:

  • Phoebe is playing an original Game Boy
  • Cats was still on Broadway
Definitely better than the past couple episodes, but still not one of the best. The Monica storyline had its moments, but it wasn't really funny. Ross saying goodbye to Marcel was very touching, but that's about it. This episode especially just felt like a hodgepodge of three stories.
