Trailer Reviews: An unoriginal and a straight-to-DVD

My review of two trailers for upcoming movies after I really start to cut in to your vacation time.

The first trailer is for the movie Haywire (Watch here). The movie stars Gina Carano ("Crush" on American Gladiators) and features such stars as Ewan McGregor, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxton, Michael Douglas, and the break-out actor from X-Men: First Class, Michael Fassbender. It is directed by Steven Soderbergh.

The trailers is definitely good (especially if you like action movies), however it just seems way too similar to the Jason Bourne movies, starring Matt Damon. Carano plays Mallory Kane, a highly trained operative for a government agency. Instead of suffering for amnesia, Kane is just simply double crossed by her own agency. Now she has to fight back against other operatives and assassins who know all of her moves.

It looks like this could be a good movie, even with an inexperienced lead, but I just think that we have already seen this movie. Haywire is pretty much Jason Bourne as a female.

The second trailer is for the movie Dirty Girl (Watch here). The only stars in this movie are Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil movies) and, William H. Macy (Fargo). However, if the trailer is any indication they are not featured that much in the movie. The movie stars Juno Temple, who has been in Atonement and The Other Boleyn Girl and Jeremy Dozier, in his first feature film role.

The movie is about Danielle (Juno Temple), the dirty girl of Norman High School in Norman, Oklahoma, in 1987. Danielle's behavior and attitude get her sent to a special education class, where she is paired on a the "Five-pound sugar baby" parenting project with Clarke (Jeremy Dozier), a quiet kid with no friends. Danielle is determined to get to California to find the father she's never met, together they steal Clarke's father's car and set off on the journey. Together they discover each other and themselves through a funny and lucky friendship.

What stood out the most to me was the way the movie is shot. It looks like it is from 1987. The storyline is interesting, even though it is not completely original (two people who are nothing alike become friends and travel somewhere). I don't think this will be a hit by any means, but I think it looks like a very good movie, and Temple looks like she could be a break-out actress from this.

If I had to pick between the two, I would see Dirty Girl over Haywire. Haywire comes out in January 2012 and Dirty Girl comes out August 5.
