Friends, "The One with the Birth": Good thing we're in a hospital

My review/recap of the May 11, 1995 episode after I celebrate Lesbian Lover Day.

As a Friends episode, this one really wasn't that good. But it was very important to the overall story of the series.

The group gets to the hospital before Carol and Susan, causing Ross to panic even more than he is already. Rachel tries to make a joke, saying Chandler does the same thing, but it fails. Chandler tells her that she has to pick the right spots. Finally Carol and Susan arrive, telling Ross that they stopped at the gift shop first to get Chunky bars.

In the waiting room, Joey befriends a pregnant woman (Leah Remini) over a Knicks game. She goes into labor and Joey comes with her to be her birth coach because no one else is there for her.

Rachel tries to impress Carol's obstetrician (Jonathan Silverman), while Monica just wants to have a baby. Chandler tells her that if they are both still single at 40, then they will get together and have a baby.

Carol kicks Ross and Susan out of the room after they constantly argue. They end up getting locked in a janitor's closet with Phoebe. The janitor eventually finds them and opens the door just in time as Carol gives birth. The three of them finally agree on a name of the baby: Ben.

Sign of times:
  • People using pay phones, because they don't have cell phones
  • Patrick Ewing on the Knicks

Not a great episode by any stretch but it was important to the show as a whole. It was nice to see how Ross and Susan came up with the name Ben. Phoebe, and Rachel really had nothing to do, and the Monica-Chandler parts weren't really needed as well. The Joey storyline was nice to watch, as Joey wasn't just a buffoon. And was that the biggest janitor closet that Ross, Susan, and Phoebe were locked in. Only one more episode left in the first season.
