Friends, "The One with the Boobies": It's a wacky world

My review/recap of the January 19, 1995 episode after I play a big game of Kerplunk.

Good episode with three side-plots and no real main plot. Phoebe has a new boyfriend, Joey's father comes to stay with him, and Chandler sees more of Rachel than they both planned.

Phoebe's new boyfriend Roger (Fisher Stevens) is a shrink, who Phoebe brings to Central Perk to meet her friends. At first all the girls like him, but once he starts psychoanalyzing them, they start hating him. He says Chandler uses his humor as a defense mechanism of being lonely and that Ross married a lesbian because he wanted his marriage to fail to make Monica look better to their parents. At first Phoebe can't see it, until he psychoanalyzes her and she realizes he is a jerk and breaks up with him.

Joey's father (Robert Costanzo) comes to town on business and decides to stay with Joey and Chandler. Joey overhears a conversation his father is having, and thinks he is talking to his mother. When Joey takes the phone away to talk to who he thinks is his mother, he discovers that his father is having an affair with a woman named Ronni (Lee Garlington). Ronni comes over to the apartment, but Joey makes the two of them stay away from each other. Joey's mother (Brenda Vaccaro) shows up and tells Joey that she knows all about the affair but is okay with it, because Joey Sr. treats her better and pays more attention to her out of guilt. Joey doesn't like it but accepts it because he loves his mother too much.

Chandler walks into Monica and Rachel's apartment to go through the refrigerator when Rachel comes out of the shower topless. Chandler sees her and Rachel keeps her distance form Chandler until the group decides that it is only fair if Rachel sees Chandler naked. Chandler refuses which leads to Rachel trying to sneak in on Chandler in the shower. Instead she sees Joey naked. Joey wants revenge on Rachel, but instead walks in on Monica in the shower. Monica tries to see Joey, but instead walks in on his father in the shower and ending the episode.

Funniest parts of the episode:
  • Joey's father introduction when he meets Roger and asks Ross how his wife is doing
  • Joey acting as a parent to his father and Ronni
Signs of the time:
  • Joey's Giant's t-shirt
  • Sting being used a a reference for a good looking guy
Definitely a good episode. It was light and didn't feature any real important moments. Three equal plots that had something for every one.
