Friends, "The One with the Butt": I play Al Pacino's butt

A review/recap of the October 27, 1994 episode after I rode the subway all the way to Brooklyn just for the hell of it.

Ehh. Just another so-so episode early on in the first season. Nothing really stands out, no real funny parts, and nothing truly important happens in this episode that really only needed Chandler, Joey, and Monica.

The weakness of Friends is that it doesn't always know what to do with all six of its main characters. Episodes like this happen, and there are only important parts for three of them, and the other three just feel left out. Episodes that utilize all six characters have just been better.

Joey gets a part in a movie as Al Pacino's butt double, but loses the role after overacting in the scene. That storyline is one-third of the episode. Awful. Not funny. Stretching nothing into ten minutes.

The same for the very brief Monica storyline. They come back to her apartment to find that Rachel has cleaned the place and has moved an ottoman, and Monica practically freaks out, while the rest of the group tells her she is obsessive about cleanliness and organization. When she says that she can be a "kook," the others test her with different scenarios. At the end, she can't fall asleep because her shoes are not put away.

The Chandler storyline had some legs to it. He goes out with Aurora (Sofia Milos), who he finds out is married and has another boyfriend - she is in a polyamorous relationship. At first Chandler loves the idea of having all the sex without the responsibility, but eventually he falls in love with her and wants to be in a committed relationship with her. Clearly she does not and the two break up. Of the three, this was the best storyline, and it was still average at best. The idea has been done so many times before and after that it isn't funny or interesting anymore.

We're slightly out of the gate of Friends, and we have hit a stumbling block. I hope that we are able to recover soon and get back to good, if not great episodes.
